Nelson 3 Silsden 1
by Dave Priestley
Nelson continued in good form against Silsden on Wednesday night to earn a much needed three points with an excellent second half display.

The Blues got off to a perfect start in the first minute of the game when Sam Heap's flick on sent Luke Hargreaves into the penalty area and he beat the keeper with a firm left foot shot into the far corner of the net.

Silsden came back strongly and looked dangerous on the attack with Kevin Ryan and Chris Simpson looking the main threat up front. On the half hour, Chris Thompson did well to block Ryan's 20 yard shot and five minutes later Marc Berry cleared the ball from the Nelson goalmouth after Ryan had forced it past Thompson.

After 39 minutes, a good run by Chris Simpson drew Thompson out of his goal to make a rash challenge on the corner of the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty against the Nelson keeper. Simpson drove the spot kick into the net past Thompson's despairing dive to level the score for the visitors.

Two minutes later, Simpson came close again when he rattled the Nelson crossbar with a free kick before the rebound was volleyed high over the goal by a team-mate.

Alex Mugan's half time team talk clearly lifted the side in the second half and the Blues pushed forward in an effort to restore their lead. After 55 minutes, Luke Hargreaves was put through by Lance Ogunyode and lifted his shot over keeper Phil Rishton as he went down at his feet to put the Blues ahead at 2-1.

The Blues were determined not to let the lead slip a second time and Alex Mugan and Marc Berry combined to deny Chris Simpson a sight of goal in a dangerous attack before Phil Prescott made a good headed clearance at the far post from James Longley's searching cross.

After 68 minutes, a great right wing move involving Sam Heap and Lance Ogunyode left the visitors' defence floundering as Ogunyode broke clear and found the net with a diagonal shot past the keeper.

After 76 minutes, Martin Payne sent Sam Heap away on the right wing before meeting Heap's cross at the far post and volleying just wide. Then Ashley Higgins' curling pass found Martin Payne in space on the right wing but his low hard cross just eluded Lance Ogunyode in front of goal.

In the last minute of the game, Sam Heap found Chris Walker with a cross field pass and Walker's shot was pushed onto the bar by Rishton to deny Nelson a fourth goal.

The Blues will be hoping to continue this form when they entertain Atherton LR at Victoria Park on Saturday.
