Nelson upset the form book to sign off their season with victory over Glossop North End on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off the back of three heavy defeats, Nelson were clearly second favourites against a Glossop side who had won the reverse fixture 3-1 at Surrey Street two weeks ago, and who were looking for the three points to seal a sixth place.
Marshalled from the dugout by Stewart Thompson and the unavailable John Luker, it was the Blues who started brightest, and Marcus Calvert and Andy Smith combined to provide a testing ball into the area on four minutes, which Nathaniel Taylor hit over the bar following a partial clearance to the edge of the area.
The Hillmen hit back with a free-kick on 10 minutes, and after a melee in the area Garry Kharas poked the ball narrowly wide of the left hand upright while on the floor.
Midway through the first half a long ball forward by the Blues caught out Glossop captain Danny Yates, who could only help head the ball on into the path of Smith. Smith's first touch took him wider left than he would have wanted, but his second was an exquisite drive across keeper Stuart Williams and into the bottom right hand corner of the net to give Nelson the lead.
It was very nearly two just two minutes later, when young Paul Walsh whipped a superb ball from the right wing across the six yard box, with Ashley Higgins just a hair's-breadth away from tapping home from three yards out.
Nelson were dealing comfortably with the Glossop attack, which had just one chance before the break, when a scramble in the box ended with Kharas forcing a point blank save out of Chris Thompson.
The visitors exerted some pressure in the first ten minutes of the second half, and from three corner kicks Kharas, twice, and Hurst headed opportunities over the bar.
The Blues came out unscathed, and could have doubled their lead on 56 minutes. A superb crossfield ball by Marc Taylor was met and laid off by Smith for Nat Taylor, who smashed a volley wide to the left of goal.
Confusion in the Nelson box from a long punt forward almost cost Nelson dear ten minutes later. Thompson and Alex Mugan left the ball for each other, and Adam Oaks nipped in only to be foiled by the recovering Thompson's block.
Glossop, who had brought a sizeable support to Victoria Park for the season finale to help create a great atmosphere, were running out of ideas as the Blues matched them in every department, and it was the Blues who killed them off in the first minute of injury time.
A great flowing move down the right resulted in a low cross eluding everyone in front of goal. Calvert collected it on the left edge of the area, before cutting inside two defenders and finding the bottom left hand corner from 10 yards to seal an unexpected but well deserved win.
