The Blues got off to the worst possible start when they went behind in only the second minute. Ryan Baker found the net with an angled shot following a half clearance from a corner.
Congleton were clearly in the ascendancy and Nelson had to withstand some pressure but soon began to put moves together in midfield. However, attacking moves repeatedly came to nothing in the final third of the field.
After 32 minutes, Scott Dundas completed a quick attack when he turned in the Nelson penalty area and curled a diagonal shot past Chris Thompson and inside the far post to double Congleton’s lead. Two minutes later in a crucial refereeing decision, home keeper Matthew Conkie escaped without punishment when he appeared to handle the ball outside his area as Lance Ogunyode broke through on goal.
At the start of the second half, Nelson conceded a harsh penalty when Chris Thompson was put in trouble by his defence and collided with an opposing forward whilst making an instinctive save. But justice was done when Thompson dived to his right to save Scott Dundas’ spot kick.
The home side looked dangerous with every attack and Scott Dundas rattled the Nelson bar with a header on the hour from Ryan Baker’s cross. But as the half wore on, Nelson began to create chances at the other end. After 73 minutes, Ashley Higgins’ precise through ball gave Martin Payne a great chance to reduce the deficit with a run into the penalty area but keeper and defender closed him down to force his shot wide of the post.
Lance Ogunyode was denied when Matthew Conkie produced a good save from his 20 yard shot on the turn which was pushed round the post for a corner. And Chris Ogunyode pulled his shot wide after the home defence opened up to allow him a good chance in the closing stages.
After 88 minutes, Chris Thompson made a great save to push Mark Fitton’s header over the bar but, from the ensuing corner, Andy Kinsey found the net with a powerful header to seal the win.
Nelson entertain Bacup Borough on Wednesday night and will hope to get back to winning ways.
