Nelson Reserves finished the season with a resounding win over Atherton LR at Victoria Park on Saturday.

They dominated the first half without getting on the scoresheet although Will Cawley came close when he hit the post after 30 minutes and Sean Thompson had a goal controversially ruled out for offside before half time.

The Blues started the second half with more determination and took the lead when Thompson hit the bar with his first attempt but scored with a close range shot from the rebound.

Nelson doubled their lead on 54 minutes when Nathan Egan's low hard cross was turned into his own net by Atherton's Neil Lancaster.

Two minutes later, Sean Thompson's strong run into the penalty area set up the chance for Nathan Egan to knock in Nelson's third goal and the Blues were cruising.

However, Atherton came back strongly and pulled a goal back on the hour with a good finish by Nick Kania. Andy Pickard made a great save to keep out a goal bound free kick as the visitors looked capable of further reducing the arrears.

But Nelson had the last word when Luke Hargreaves' corner fell to Azar Khan in the final minute and he controlled the ball before shooting home for the Blues' fourth goal.
