The Blues' second string finally got back to winning ways, with a resounding
victory over the current Reserve league champions Salford City.
victory over the current Reserve league champions Salford City.
With 5 players being unavailable from last week, manager Andy Wych had to
really shuffle his pack to send out a team that would compete with Salford.
This he did to great effect because after 9 minutes of the game Oliver Smith
showed great determination in winning 2 tackles and drawing defenders to him
which left Lee Sanderson in acres of space and after a perfect pass from
Smith, Sanderson kept a very cool head and slotted the ball home for 1 - 0
to the homesters.

Nelson then completely dominated the game, having a good 80% of the
possesion, with Smith, Paul Harrison and Mick Molyneux all having good
chances to score.
Molyneux hit the bar with a rasping shot, and then on 45 minutes young Laurie Cryer fed Smith whos strong run into the area was brought to an abrupt halt by the last Salford defender who took Smiths legs away from under him.
The Referee rightly gave a penalty, but amazed everyone in the ground by not even producing a card to the defender. Molyneux stepped up and despatched the penalty kick, sending the 'keeper the wrong way, leaving the score 2 - 0 to Nelson at half-time.

The second half started with a bang. A run of the mill save from Nelson
'keeper Steve Petty was somehow bundled into the net after just 1 minute.
Salford then had their tails up and started to ask questions of Nelson's
defence. They had a lot of possesion for 15 minutes and just when the tide
was swinging back Nelsons way, a Salford freekick found its way around the
wall and into the net to make the score 2 - 2.

But to be fair to the Reserves, they never stopped plugging away at Salford, and they were rewarded with 10 minutes to go, when a Sanderson left
foot free kick was controlled by Molyneux with his back to goal, he then
flicked the ball up and scored with a shot over his left shoulder.
Then with 2 minutes left, skipper Paul Nutter fed the impressive Smith who scored the fourth goal, giving Smith just reward for his excellent performance. The game finished a comfortable 4 - 2 victory to Nelson Reserves.

Manager Andy Wych said in his post match interveiw "A 4-2 scoreline is a good result, but we were better than that, we should have won at a canter. We gifted Salford 2 goals to put us under pressure when we were in total control of the game.
"Everyone performed to the high standards that we have achieved on a number of occassions this season. When we play to our true potential, we are not too far away from being an outfit that can challenge for league and cup honours next season. The whole team performed very well today and I will be looking for much the same on Tuesday night when we travel to Glossop".
