Some first half schoolboy defending cost the Blues three goals and the game against an average Atherton side.

The Nelson second string never got out of second gear in the first period and went behind to a 21st minute strike when a simple ball over the top wasn't dealt with leaving the Atherton number 9 to fire home from 6 yards.

Eight minutes later it was 2-0 when Adam Parker stood on the ball instead of clearing it letting the same striker complete his brace in similiar fashion.

So, after half an hour of play you would think the penny would of dropped and to tighten up at the back. Keep that thought.
On 40 minutes Nelson decided to put some pressure on their hosts and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Atherton box. Danny Stanley despatched a beauty of a strike which was tipped over the bar by the home keeper.

But, 45 minutes on the clock, and once again a simple ball over the top let in Athertons number 10 to slot the ball home to complete a first half to forget.
The second half was a completely different affair as The Blues finally woke up and laid siege to the Atherton goal.

61 minutes in and Chris Heslop smashed the ball home to make it 3-1, then Mick Hall claimed his 3rd goal of the campaign with a simple tap in on 74 minutes to make it 3-2.

In the final 15 minutes, Nelson created a host of chances to level the game, but found the home keeper in fine form.

The late flourish shouldn't have been needed though, and ultimately the three points was lost in an abject first half display.
