Following this week's Division Two action, just three points now separates the top seven sides.

With some of the Division Two sides in Cup action this weekend, a handful of teams had the chance to bridge the gap at the top with double headers.

Great Harwood and Winsford were the teams to benefit most. The former saw off Mechanics in Blackpool 3-0 on Tuesday courtesy of a Darbyshire hat-trick and followed it up with a 2-0 victory over Oldham Town on Saturday. They now lie in second place behind Colne - who played on Tuesday only, collecting a point in a 1-1 draw at Cheadle - on goal difference.

Winsford could well be the dark horses as they catch up with their games in hand. Home victories over high-riding Formby on Wednesday night, thanks to two goals from Given, and a thumping 6-2 win over Darwen at the weekend - Given, Williams and Welstead with a brace apiece - have propelled them into ninth with the top six firmly in their sights.

Maine Road could have joined the two leaders on 25 points, but after edging past Padiham 2-1 on Tuesday thanks to late goals from Wright and Todman, they surprisingly came unstuck at home to Eccleshall. They twice came from behind, but Griffiths netted an unlikely winner for the visitors with twelve minutes left.

Flixton missed a second opportunity to go joint top within a week as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Holker Old Boys on Saturday, a result which leaves them just below Nelson in fifth on 23 points.

After their defeat on Wednesday night, Formby leapt back into third following victory at Ashton. The game was all over by half-time as the Scousers netted four times - Olsen bagging a hat-trick - and though Ashton pulled two back in the second half, the damage had already been done. The defeat meant Ashton slipped to eight, as they only picked up a point in a 1-1 draw at Leek earlier in the week.

Nelson's victory over Holker Old Boys on Tuesday had moved them up to second, but they dropped back down to fourth following their Vase participation on Saturday.

Other Saturday results saw Padiham record their first victory under Vince Overson with a 3-0 win at Castleton, and strugglers Daisy Hill and Chadderton shared four goals at New Sirs.
