Nelson Football Club For Sale

By Gary Broughton
Wednesday, 16th June 2010
Nelson Football Club Limited has today been put up for sale by owner and chairman Alan Pickering.

Nelson-Town-crest-600-780After the recent loss of his father, who had been connected with the football club for half a century, current chairman Alan Pickering has decided now is the right time to offer someone new the opportunity of taking over this historic East Lancashire Football Club.

Alan loves the club dearly, and would love to see it go from strength to strength, but feels it needs fresh impetus under new ownership headed by individuals with the necessary drive and vigour to take it forward.

Formed in 1881, the club has had many notable achievements during its 129-year history.  It was the first team to travel to Spain to take on Real Madrid - and beat them - back in 1923, and they remained the only English club to achieve that until Arsenal won at the Bernabeu a couple of years ago.

Nelson was a member of the Football League for 10 seasons between 1921 and 1931, and won the Third Division North title in 1923.  That led to a season in Division Two where, despite being relegated, they won at Manchester United, and to this day they are the only club who can boast a 100% league record at Old Trafford!

Nelson also boasted some success in the post-war years of the Lancashire Combination - then an unofficial 'fifth' division - and it was during this time that they gave future Liverpool legend Joe Fagan his first opportunity in management, with Joe leaving Manchester City to take up the position.

For further information and enquiries relating to the sale, please contact Alan directly, either via post at: Nelson Football Club, c/o Alan Pickering, 18 Lancaster Gate, Nelson, Lancashire, BB9 0AP, or by telephone on 07534 502869.
