Another break from league action this weekend, as Nelson host Great Harwood Town in the First Round of the, wait for it, Division Two Trophy.
I'm not a fan of this competition, and the main benefit for me is that a victory against one of the form sides of the division may get us extra brownie points and enhance our reputation for when we eventually return to league action.Great Harwood are unbeaten in the league this season, having won five and drawn three of their eight games. Surprisingly they were held 2-2 at home to Cheadle Town on Monday night, though it was a point that saw them move above us into third on goal difference.
They have, however, tasted defeat in the F.A. Vase this season - and how! It was a shock 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Cammell Laird in the First Qualifying Round.
For Nelson, it doesn't get any better next week when we'll be facing Leek away in the 'League Challenge Cup'. Perhaps soon we'll get to the stage when we'll emulate the Unibond League of a few years ago, where everyone who got knocked out of a Cup started up in a new one until there was one team left - who duly went home with the "We got knocked out of every cup in the First Round Cup".
Yawn! Roll on October 11th to get back to the bread and butter stuff!
