A second knockout success on the bounce as Nelson eased into the Second Round of the Division Two Trophy at Cheadle.

Two second half goals took Nelson through to the third round of the North West Counties League Second Division Trophy in a well deserved win at Cheadle Town.

The Blues might have been three goals up at half time with Jason Jones coming close with two gilt edged chances and Brad Pates seeing his shot deflected onto the crossbar.

Cheadle’s threat never materialised thanks to a confident performance by the Nelson defence and keeper Billy Carrington who was not afraid to act as sweeper when needed.

Paul Fildes thought he had given the Blues the lead with a quickly taken free kick on the hour but the referee ruled out the ‘goal’ as he had not been ready.

Martin Fletcher retook the kick and, when his shot proved too hot for the keeper to hold, Duncan Bennett followed up to force home the loose ball and put Nelson in front.

Just four minutes later, the Blues doubled their lead with a spectacular volley by Neil Chapman when he met Darren Fullard’s cross to hook the ball past the Cheadle keeper and put the game beyond their opponent’s reach.
