Our Vase campaign is over for the season after a confident display by Marske United at the GER Stadium.

The home side signalled their intentions from the outset, and carved out several chances in the opening ten minutes as the Blues struggled to get into the game.

On four minutes Andrew Raw sent in a deep cross from the right, with Robert Jones heading over the bar, and within a minute Chris Thompson tipped Stuart Jackson's header over the crossbar from a home corner.

The home side did have the ball in the net on seven minutes, only to see it ruled out fo offside, and two minutes later Michael Hallen nipped in from the right, his low shot across goal being tipped wide by Thompson.

Nelson had no answers, and it was no surprise when the Northern League side opened the scoring on 14 minutes.  Winger Owen Dixon caused havoc down the right and slid the perfect ball across goal for the unmarked Jones to crash home.

And three minutes later it got worse for Nelson as Derek Bradley glanced a cross from the left into the Nelson net via the right hand upright.

Ten minutes later Nelson were almost gifted a way back into the game when Andrew Shalwell overhit a backpass, but keeper Brendan Lederway scampered back to clear it short of the goalline.

It was as close as Nelson were to come as the hosts continued to dominate proceedings, and Shalwell should have made it three on 42 minutes, but sliced a chest back from Jones horribly wide of goal.

Nelson enjoyed better possession at the start of the second half, but it was Marske who created the first chance on 52 minutes as Bradley's cross from the left was headed over by Jones.  And two minutes later, Benn Thompson turned smartly inside the area, forcing a smart save from Chris Thompson with his legs.

On 59 minutes Marske made it three as a smart move down the left gave Bradley the chance to whip a ball right across goal for Dixon to nod in from close range at the far post.

Substitute Ashley Higgins made an impact for Nelson, and they started created one or two chances.  A dazzling run on 65 minutes ended him squaring the ball to Lance Ogunyode, who fired narrowly wide, and one minute later a floated 20-yard shot from him only just cleared the crossbar.

But with 20 minutes left, the Blues conceded a free-kick 25 yards out, and substitute Daniel Brunskill placed a beauty into the top right hand corner to make it four.

Nelson then created two chances in quick succession, with Higgins once again firing one just over, while Sam Heap was played in towards the right side of goal but fired wide of the left hand upright,

Heap was then denied with fifteen minutes left as he forced a smart low save from Lederway, but Marske made it five two minutes later as a quick-free kick left Nelson flat-footed down the left and the low cross across goal presented Stuart Jackson with the easiest of tap-ins.

To their credit, Nelson created further chances, and Heap was again denied by the onrushing Lederway when played through, while Ogunyode screwed wide of goal after being found by a long ball fed from midfield.

All in all it was a disappointing day on the field for Nelson, and they rarely got going against opponents who it has to be said played well and will certainly create plenty of problems for whoever they meet in the next round.
