Nelson take part in the very first preliminary round of the 2004/05 F.A. Cup this Saturday, facing Northern League Chester-le-Street at Victoria Park.
Town were formed as recently as 1972 by a group of pub regulars, and were initially known as Chester-le-Street Garden Farm, changing their name to the current one five years later on entering the Wearside League. After winning the Championship in 1980/81 they moved onto the Northern League, where they were Second Division champions in 1983/84. After relegation in the mid-90s they quickly bounced back by winning it again, and have remained in the First Division since 1998.
They started this season well with a 3-2 home win over Morpeth Town and a 2-0 win away to promoted Consett, but suffered a setback last week with a 2-1 home reverse against early pacesetters Billingham Synthonia.
One thing is for sure though, with the likes of Bedlington Terriers in that division we are going to be in a tough battle this weekend.
